Is it worth it to purchase a timeshare directly from the Wyndham/Fairfield rather than through resale?
I have owned some timeshares (UDI points) with Wyndham/Fairfield that I bought through resale a few years ago. I was recently invited by a sales agent that told me that soon, everybody with resale buys woud only be allowed to use them for their home resort and not be able to use their points in the other resorts (even though they are Wyndham resorts). In the past, I’ve always been able been able to use them with no problems at all Wyndham/Fairfield resorts, so I am wondering if this is a scam to get me to puchase more points directly from them (because this is what the agent is trying to get me to do). Does anyone know if this is right or are they just talking me into throwing them some money? After all, aren’t points just points?
By the way, the agent also told me that he would help me cover my maintenance fees by taking some of my points and helping me use them to rent out properties? Yet this seems like something in the gray area and on the side (since there really is no contract stating this commitment nor how much is guaranteed that I will get back), this appears sort of shaky. Is this legal and has anyone experienced this before?
They are just trying to upgrade you. Resale buys are no different than buying from the resort for fairfield. You legally bought points and have a contract/deed stating how you’re able to use them. Your contract states you can use them anywhere, then you can. They’ll spin you so many lies to make you upgrade your points and earn them a commission. They play on people’s fears and I wouldn’t believe a word of it. You are not the first person this has happened to. I often read/participate in Tugbbs forums and this lie has been spun to others too. Relax and try to dodge the sales snakes.

I don’t know if this will help you out or not but I currently work for Marriott Vacation Club and i know for a fact that marriott would certainly allow you to use your points in the situation your in base on availability. I reckon you shouldn’t buy another time share for the moment.

I would suggest you get someone knowledgeable in real estate to tell you the answer to your question. I find it hard to believe they can change the rules for people already in the system. They may be able to change the rules for people who have not bought yet, but I believe you are an owner with all rights your received at the time you made your buy. This means that you are not eligible for VIP rights. Look into it to protect your past buys. In the mean time don’t buy any more, Remember these timeshare companies need the maintenance fees they get form the resellers and the number of people available to buy is not going up as quick as the building that are being constructed. The only people who get slighted by resellers are the sales persons and for the most part people who buy through resellers will not buy through the resorts. This means the resorts do not lose out on sales and they gain the continued income through maintenance fees.
